Diamond is the hardest naturally occurring material and presents extremely demanding requirements for precision processing equipment.
For small-sized diamonds, nanosecond laser processing is commonly used. However, as synthetic diamond sizes increase, conventional nanosecond laser processing can suffer from low processing efficiency and high material loss.
Watlaser Water Guided Laser technology confines the laser beam within a high-speed water column, enabling efficient and low-loss precision machining of diamond.
Watlaser has successfully processed a diamond sheet with a thickness of only:
· Thickness: 100 μm
· Cross-sectional size: 10 × 10 mm
According to publicly available information, this result was reported as the first of its kind in the industry.

The single-pass cutting depth is one of the key indicators of a Water Guided Laser system's capability for diamond processing. Diamond machining traditionally faces two major challenges: Low processing efficiency and High cutting loss.
Watlaser’s independently developed Water Guided Laser technology can achieve:
· Single-pass cutting depth: 20 mm+
· Flip-side cutting depth: 40 mm+
The technology has reached a leading level in China according to the company's published information.

Diamond is one of the most promising materials for advanced semiconductor thermal management due to its extremely high thermal conductivity.
However, its high hardness and brittleness make precision machining of microchannel structures extremely challenging. Conventional machining methods can easily cause cracking, poor surface quality, and dimensional inconsistency.
Watlaser Water Guided Laser technology enables precision machining of diamond microchannels with minimal material damage.
Processing Example
· Surface roughness: Ra ≤ 1 μm
· Microchannel width/depth consistency error: ≤ 15 μm
· No visible cracking after machining
· High-quality microchannel structures

Diamond copper combines ultra-high thermal conductivity with a coefficient of thermal expansion compatible with semiconductor substrates, making it an attractive material for advanced heat sinks and liquid-cooled thermal management components.
However, the combination of diamond particles and a copper matrix makes conventional cutting, drilling, and slotting difficult.
Watlaser Water Guided Laser technology enables efficient precision machining of diamond copper while minimizing diamond pull-out and maintaining excellent cutting surface quality.
Processing Example
· Cutting depth: 20+ mm
· Smooth cutting surfaces
· Minimal diamond particle pull-out
· Suitable for heat sinks and liquid-cooled plates

Diamond-doped tungsten-based materials are typical difficult-to-machine composite materials used in industrial manufacturing. They combine the extreme hardness of diamond with the high density of a tungsten-based matrix.
Watlaser Water Guided Laser technology enables precision processing of this type of composite material while minimizing diamond particle pull-out and thermal damage.
Processing Performance
· Diamond particle size: ≥ 300 μm
· Dimensional error: within 20 μm
· No diamond particle pull-out
· Processing time: only 1/20 of the conventional process

Diamond-silicon carbide (Diamond-SiC) composites combine the exceptionally high thermal conductivity of diamond with the low thermal expansion, high specific stiffness, and excellent heat and corrosion resistance of silicon carbide.
Their favorable thermal expansion compatibility makes them promising materials for power semiconductor packaging, semiconductor heat spreaders, and optical mirror substrates. However, both diamond and silicon carbide are extremely hard and brittle. Their differences in hardness make interfacial machining challenging, often leading to selective material removal and particle pull-out, rapid tool wear, and low processing efficiency.
Watlaser Water Guided Laser technology enables precision machining of diamond-SiC composite blocks measuring 10 × 10 mm with a thickness of 4.3 mm. The process produces flat cutting surfaces with no edge chipping, while minimizing particle pull-out at the cutting edges. No visible thermal damage or microcracks were observed, helping meet the surface-quality requirements for semiconductor packaging.

Silicon carbide (SiC) is a key third-generation semiconductor material. With a Mohs hardness of approximately 9, SiC is extremely hard and brittle, making conventional machining challenging. Traditional diamond wire cutting can result in relatively low processing efficiency, edge chipping, and reduced surface quality.
Watlaser Water Guided Laser technology provides a non-contact cutting solution that minimizes thermal damage and edge breakage while improving processing efficiency.
Processing Example
· Inner diameter: 1 mm; Outer diameter: 2 mm; Height: 20 mm
· High-quality cylindrical cutting
· Improved processing efficiency compared with conventional diamond wire cutting

Thin-walled SiC components are particularly sensitive to mechanical stress and thermal damage during machining.
Watlaser Water Guided Laser technology enables precise cutting of thin SiC structures while minimizing cracking and edge chipping.
Processing Example
· Wall thickness: 100 μm
· No visible cracking
· No edge chipping
· Thickness error: ≤ 10 μm

Silicon carbide (SiC) is a key advanced ceramic material used in aerospace applications. Its high hardness and brittleness make conventional micro-hole machining challenging. Watlaser Water Guided Laser technology enables precision machining of SiC with high dimensional accuracy while minimizing edge chipping and thermal damage.
Application Example
· Material thickness: 4.2 mm
· Hole diameter: 600 μm
· Dimensional error: < 5 μm
· Processing efficiency improved by approximately 40%
The result is a clean, precise micro-hole with excellent edge quality.

Aluminum nitride (AlN) is an advanced ceramic material widely used in power modules, IGBTs, and RF device packaging due to its high thermal conductivity, excellent electrical insulation, and coefficient of thermal expansion close to that of silicon.
Its high hardness and brittleness make complex machining challenging, particularly for three-dimensional structures combining a contoured bottom opening with two through-holes.
Watlaser Water Guided Laser technology enables high-precision machining of these complex structures in a single operation, achieving excellent dimensional accuracy and surface quality.
Application Example
• Opening angle deviation: ±0.15°
• Hole diameter deviation: ≤ 10 μm
• Cutting surface roughness: Ra 1.0 μm
• High yield and consistent batch production
The process delivers precise, complex geometries with consistent quality, providing an alternative to imported CNC machining solutions.
As semiconductor materials continue to evolve toward higher performance and greater power density, conventional cutting and machining methods face increasing challenges in terms of thermal damage, edge chipping, processing efficiency, and dimensional accuracy. Watlaser Water Guided Laser technology combines a focused laser beam with a high-pressure water jet to provide precise, low-thermal-impact machining for advanced semiconductor and thermal management materials.
